In Memory | Of Being – Mixed Reality in the Dome
Nov 8 - 22

Join a mixed reality journey back through time as you experience State Library Victoria's iconic Dome like never before.

Two older people wearing mixed reality headsets talking to each other as black and white and sepia images float around in a large, multi-storey gallery space behind them

Blending real-world architecture with technology and archives, In Memory | Of Being immerses you in the Library’s collection and forgotten history, merging past, present and future in a deeply sensory experience.

Created by Yoyo Munk (the artist-scientist behind the mixed reality work Medusa, and also Technical Director of Asia TOPA’s massive hit Kagami) over an eight-week residency at the Library, this responsive, site-specific digital artwork returns following a sold-out debut as part of Open House Melbourne.

You will wear a mixed-reality headset to explore a dynamic virtual gallery space within the Dome, encountering audio and archival images that speak to the role of the library as a fragile and imperfect memory of culture.

The immersive and interactive installation uses 3D spatialisation to reimagine the Library’s collection in a whole new dimension, creating an explorable and evolving sculpture of imagery and sound.

Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind digital exhibition that transforms one of Melbourne’s most beloved spaces.

About Yoyo Munk

Yoyo Munk is a scientist and artist based in Pittsburgh. A biologist by training, their background spans from insect flight aerodynamics and navigation behavior to the psychophysics of human visual responses to augmented reality displays. In their artistic practice, they employ headset-based mixed reality as a medium, creating gallery-scale generative works designed to be explored by large audiences, anchored in efforts to create spaces for staying with the trouble of ongoing mass extinction. This is exemplified in their work  Medusa (2021), created in collaboration with architect Sou Fujimoto and produced by the content collective Tin Drum.

Munk is also the author and project director behind the companion book Medusa, published in 2023 by Hurtwood Press. They have also served as technical director for The Life (2019) and Kagami (2023), both by Tin Drum. Prior to this, they established and led the Quantitative Experience research group for vision science at the augmented reality company Magic Leap. They hold a PhD in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley and wrote their thesis on the aerodynamics of gliding in wingless canopy ants.

In 2025, Munk was State Library Victoria’s inaugural Creative Technologist-in-Residence
